Plastic bottles are among the most recyclable household materials, yet recycling facilities vary and collection streams can be unreliable. Reusing a bottle directly — for months or years — is often a more effective environmental choice than a single recycling journey. Before you start: flip the bottle over and find the resin identification code — a number inside a triangle on the base. Most beverage bottles are #1 (PET) or #2 (HDPE), which are suitable for cold-water storage reuse. Avoid using #3 (PVC), #6 (polystyrene), or #7 (other/polycarbonate) for anything that will contact food or drink — especially with heat — as these materials can release additives. For garden and craft projects the plastic type is usually irrelevant, but for anything that holds food, check the code first.
Garden (12)
The garden is where plastic bottles earn their keep most reliably. PET beverage bottles are non-toxic in soil contact and hold up through a full growing season.
- Seed starter pots. Cut the bottom 8–10 cm off a 2-litre bottle. Fill with seed-raising mix, sow seeds, and place on a tray. The transparent walls let you watch root development without disturbing the seedling. Once two true leaves appear, transplant.
- Self-watering drippers. Pierce the cap three to five times with a heated needle for a slow drip rate, or up to ten times for a faster one. Fill the bottle with water, replace the cap, and invert it into the soil near a plant's root zone. Gravity feeds water slowly as the soil dries — works especially well for tomatoes and courgettes in containers.
- Mini greenhouse cloches. Cut the bottom off a large bottle and place it over a seedling or young plant to create a personal greenhouse. Remove the cap for ventilation on warm days; replace it on cold nights.
- Vertical wall gardens. Mount six to eight bottles sideways on a fence or wall using cable ties through pre-drilled holes. Fill with a peat-free potting mix and plant trailing herbs or strawberries. Position the openings at a slight upward angle to retain moisture.
- Watering cans. Pierce eight to twelve holes in the cap of a 2-litre bottle with a heated needle. Fill with water and use as a gentle rose-head for seedlings and fine seed drills.
- Bird feeders. Cut two opposing openings near the base, large enough for your target species. Thread a wooden dowel through as a perch. Fill with seed through the openings before hanging; scrub the feeder monthly — stale seed can harbour moulds that harm birds.
- Butterfly feeders. Same structure as a bird feeder, but loaded with a sugar-water solution (four parts water to one part sugar) in a shallow dish insert. Replace solution every two to three days in warm weather to prevent fermentation.

- Drip irrigation from half-buried bottles. Remove the cap, cut the bottom off, and push the neck 5–8 cm into the soil near a plant's root zone. Fill with water; it seeps out at root level where it is most useful, reducing surface evaporation.

Thread them onto a central pipe or bamboo pole and fill each pocket with growing medium. Household (10)
Clean, dry bottles make solid storage and organisation tools. For anything that will contact food — grain scoops, snack containers — use only #1 or #2 plastic and avoid heat contact.
- Pencil and utensil holders. Cut the bottle cleanly at about 12 cm height. File or tape the cut edge smooth. A wide-base 2-litre bottle is stable enough to hold scissors, rulers, and a full complement of pens without tipping.
- Small craft supply containers. Narrow-neck bottles are good for small beads, sequins, and safety pins — you can see the contents through the sides, the lid closes securely, and the bottle will not shatter if knocked off a table.
- Scoops. Cut diagonally across the bottle starting from below the handle to the opposite side. The resulting scoop works for bird seed, compost, dry laundry powder, and soil.

- Bag dispensers. Remove the top and bottom sections of a 2-litre bottle to leave the middle cylinder. Mount it inside a kitchen cabinet and stuff it with folded plastic carrier bags. Pull from the bottom as needed — the stack compresses down through the cylinder automatically.
- Reusable ice packs. Fill a bottle three-quarters full with water — leave room for expansion on freezing — seal it, and freeze. Use HDPE (#2) or PET (#1) bottles, not polycarbonate (#7). Inspect before each use and replace if the bottle shows any cracks or cloudiness.
- Travel dispensers. Decant shampoo, conditioner, or body wash into small, squeezable bottles with secure caps. Label clearly with a strip of tape and a permanent marker — unlabelled travel bottles create confusion and accidental misuse.
- Organisers for small hardware. A row of cut-down bottles mounted in a workshop stores nuts, bolts, screws, and drill bits by size. Transparent sides mean you can see stock levels without opening anything.
Craft (10)
PET plastic takes acrylic paint well when lightly sanded or primed first, cuts cleanly with scissors, and is flexible enough to bend into curves before springing back. These ten projects focus on visible, decorative results.
- Snow globes. Fill a clean jar or wide-mouth bottle with distilled water and a few drops of glycerine. Glue a small figure to the inside of the lid with waterproof adhesive. Add fine glitter and seal the lid with waterproof adhesive, allowing it to cure fully before inverting.
- Flower vases (decorated). Lightly sand the exterior of a clean, dry bottle, prime it, and paint with acrylic. A simple colour-block in two contrasting tones reads as deliberate. Fill with water for fresh flowers — PET (#1) is food-safe for cold water contact.
- Piñatas. A large bottle provides a firmer armature than a balloon. Cover with papier-mâché (newspaper strips and diluted PVA), allowing each layer to dry completely before adding the next — three to four layers produce a workable shell. Decorate with tissue-paper fringing once fully dry.
- Lamp bases (stacked with internal LED). Stack and glue several large clear bottles to form a column. Run a battery-powered LED string inside. Safety: use only battery-powered or low-voltage USB LED strings — never mains-wired bulbs. Plastic bottles have no fire resistance, and the heat from an incandescent or halogen bulb enclosed in plastic is a genuine fire hazard (NFPA guidance on improvised lighting). Low-voltage LEDs produce negligible heat and are the correct choice here.
- Wind spinners. Cut spiral slits from the base of the bottle toward the neck, leaving the neck intact to hang from. Spread the spiral petals gently outward. The whole spiral turns in a light breeze. File or tape all cut edges before hanging.
- Jewellery from cut PET. A heat gun or hair dryer (not an open flame) softens PET enough to shape. Cut pieces, warm briefly, and they curl as they cool — experiment to find shapes you like. Drill small holes once the shape has set and add jewellery findings. Wear eye protection when heat-shaping — hot plastic can release small amounts of steam.
- Bracelets from thin strips. Cut a ring 2–3 cm wide around the bottle's cylindrical section. Warm it with a hair dryer to relax its tension. Shape it around a cylindrical object (a jar or bottle of the right diameter) as it cools. Decorate with nail polish, acrylic paint, or washi tape strips pressed flat.
- Beads. Cut strips, roll them into tube shapes, and seal with a dot of superglue. Thread onto cord when dry. Sand all edges before wearing — the cut edges of PET are sharp enough to scratch skin.
- Wind chimes. Cut the bottom sections of several bottles into bell shapes. Pierce a hole in each top and thread them onto a branch or dowel with cord at varying heights. In a breeze they produce a soft, woody tap rather than the metallic ring of traditional chimes.
- Mosaic pieces. Crush or cut bottles into irregular shapes, sort by colour, and use as lightweight mosaic filler in resin pours or planter decoration. Strong craft adhesive bonds them to terracotta or concrete surfaces.
Kids' projects (7)
Most of these are suitable for children with adult help at the cutting steps. Projects involving heat or pressure need direct adult supervision — not just adult presence in the room.
- Bowling pins. Fill six to ten bottles with a little sand or water for stability. Set them up on a smooth floor and use a soft ball. Easy to reset.
- Boats (half-bottle hull with a sail). Cut a large bottle in half lengthways. The lower half floats hull-side down. A cocktail stick masted with a square of cloth or paper acts as a sail. Test in a sink or bathtub first before any outdoor water use.
- Rain sticks. Fill a bottle with rice or dried beans and seal securely. When turned upside down, the contents cascade like falling rain. Safety: tape the cap firmly shut so young children cannot open it. - Baking-soda bottle rockets. A vinegar-and-baking-soda rocket is a legitimate science project, but one that requires proper handling. Adult supervision is mandatory for all ages. Launch outdoors on level ground with all bystanders at least 3 metres back from the launch point. Point the bottle away from people and windows before adding the vinegar — the cork exits under pressure and can cause serious eye injury. All participants should wear safety goggles. Do not lean over the bottle once the vinegar is in.
- Water scoops for outdoor play. Cut the top off a large (gallon/4-litre) bottle diagonally to make a wide scoop. Smooth the cut edge with a file or warm the edge briefly and press flat. Children use these to fill buckets, dig in sand, or scoop water.
- Bottle-cap collections and games. Collect caps, sort by colour, and paint them in two contrasting tones to play matching or draughts-style games. Use ACMI AP-certified paint — look for the AP seal on the label. Safety: bottle caps are a choking hazard for children under 3. Store cap collections in a location accessible only to older children.
- Pencil tidies decorated with paper. Cut the bottom 10 cm of a bottle cleanly (adult step). Cover the exterior with patterned paper or washi tape.
